We are continuing our Women Behind Defender series with Michelle, a former Racing Driver from Michigan, USA. Growing up in the car industry, building her own race car – a ’69 Camaro drag racer, this led to her career in the automotive industry. In 2003, Michelle moved to the UK and started her journey here at JLR. Michelle was involved on working on the vehicle dynamics for the new Defender. Michelle made it her mission to ensure the steering weight on the new Defender wasn’t too heavy to appeal to both men and women. When we set out to create Defender, we set out to create a vehicle that would stand the test of time. It was a challenge for the team to balance low-speed agility, comfort and off-road ability. Michelle said “We have been delighted by the reaction and its success. It’s still my favourite car.” Find out more about Michelle’s exciting journey and her continued success at JLR. https://lnkd.in/g_B4JWT4 #LifeatJLR #WomeninEngineering #CareersatJLR

Today, we wrapped up our month-long #Vaisakhi celebrations with a final tour of our Vaisakhi themed Defender.     Over the last few weeks, the Defender toured our UK manufacturing plants educating employees on the religious festival of Vaisakhi which featured at Nagar Kirtan processions across the Midlands.

It was a big weekend for Jaguar TCS Racing as they charged their way around the tight, iconic roads of Monaco to achieve their first 1-2 of the season. Alongside this excellent performance, JLR is delighted to confirm that the team will be committing to competing in the GEN4 era of Formula E. As we enter a critical phase of our Reimagine strategy, the fast-paced approach the team takes to innovation on and off-track will add even more value to JLR as we bring to market our next generation electric vehicles. Critically, as we look to the future, our next generation electric Jaguars will be the beneficiaries of Wolfspeed Silicone Carbide semi-conductors and Castrol ON transmission fluid, the latter of which is a re-refined transmission oil with the same performance properties as virgin-based oils. This is an exciting era for the Jaguar TCS Racing and for JLR, as we look to be carbon net zero across our products and operations, by 2039 and electrify all of our brands by 2030. #Reimagine

Watch as prototypes of the quietest and most refined Range Rover yet, are captured undergoing cold temperature calibration assessments in the Arctic Circle.   Range Rover Electric marks a new era for the Range Rover brand, building on exemplary design since 1970 to deliver leading electric propulsion capability, refinement and luxury travel. The testing represents a key milestone on our electrification journey as we deliver our Reimagine strategy and work towards carbon net zero by 2039.   The first tests have focused on the capability of the Electric Drive Units (EDUs) - effectively the vehicle’s core components including the transmission, electric motor and power electronics - in extreme sub-zero temperatures as low as –40°C.   In a first for Range Rover, JLR engineers have developed a new traction control system that distributes wheel slip management tasks directly to each individual electric drive unit, reducing the torque reaction time at each wheel from 100 milliseconds to 1 millisecond.   This enables precise EDU speed control for accurate management of wheel slip, reducing the need for ABS intervention and delivering maximum traction while maintaining composed refinement on all surfaces.   This is exceptional work by our most talented people, working to perfect Range Rover Electric to ensure its capability remains unparalleled when it reaches our clients.   Sign up to the waiting list here: https://lnkd.in/d3ejqGkx

The contributions of female engineers at JLR are crucial to our business. As such, we’re spotlighting some of the incredible women who work on the Defender, showcasing their individual talents. Amy studied acoustics at university, with an interest in musical theatre and saw her future being in theatre sound engineering. A representative from JLR visited the university to connect with students on potential career opportunities in acoustics. This inspired Amy to join JLR back in 2013 on the graduate scheme working on the Range Rover Evoque, moving onto the new Defender in 2015. 11 years on since joining JLR, Lead Engineer Amy has stayed within infotainment ever since. She has continued to grow and develop in her role, becoming a Team Leader. She reflects on the trajectory of women in engineering. Being the only female to graduate in her degree that year, to today with most of her HMI team being women. At JLR we are all working towards a common goal of Modern Luxury, embracing change in every aspect of the business. Dorka, a CAD engineer was part of redesigning the latest Defender door trim. Dorka went from an intern here at JLR, to working on the Defender at our technical centre in Budapest, Hungary. As a young girl, she had an interest in making things and DIY, it wasn’t until a project at university that she found her passion for the car industry. JLR’s Hungarian technical engineering office works on body and chassis engineering. Supporting the nearby Nitra production centre in Slovakia, where Defender and Discovery are manufactured. Dorka recognises that we are shaping the future for female engineers, but there is still work to do. “I always feel treated as an equal. JLR is like a big family.” Read on about how Dorka is constantly pushing the boundaries in her career as a female engineer. https://lnkd.in/eM_6N_HE

As we continue to adopt #circulareconomy principles, we are proud to announce the launch of our first commercially available Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using JLR battery packs in conjunction with DeepTech start-up Allye. Each portable BESS utilises #secondlife Range Rover and Range Rover Sport PHEV batteries and is capable of storing 270kWh of energy - nearly a month’s worth of power for the average UK home. Our Engineering team will use the BESS to provide zero emissions charging while testing the new Range Rover Electric ahead of its launch later this year. Our Gaydon Engineering Centre opened its doors at the weekend for an immersive Formula E experience, where 400 fans watched the Misano, Italy race live from the Auditorium to cheer on Jaguar TCS Racing. The inaugural weekend in Misano saw Nick Cassidy take his fourth podium of the season for Jaguar TCS Racing – a fantastic achievement. Alongside the live action, our guests also got the chance to interact with Formula E race simulators, virtual reality replicating life in the race pits, and an eclectic line-up of Jaguar race cars from over the years, including the current all-electric race car, the Jaguar I-TYPE 6. It was a delight to welcome so many excited faces, including younger generations who were able to immerse themselves in the world of JLR, and hopefully seeding ideas about the broad variety of future career opportunities in the industry. #JLR #Reimagine #FormulaE #WeRaceTogether
